Predated Year 13X (13 years before year 0), Jenova landed on the Planet, having traveled through space on a meteor. This fall from the heavens created a giant wound on the Planet's surface that would later come to be known as the "Northern Crater." Since that time, the Lifestream has been focused in that area to restore itself. The area around there is a frozen ice-shelf.

After her arrival, Jenova emerged from the Crater and approached the Cetra using her mimic abilities to glean the memories and emotions of the Cetra. Those who were taken victim of Jenova were infected with Jenova's cells and mutated into monsters. Jenova would then take the form of the fallen Cetra, and so get close enough to destroy their loved ones.

Quickly, Jenova was able to destroy most of the Cetra civilization. The cousin species, the humans, hid from Jenova and allowed the Cetra to be mostly wiped-out. Those few Cetra that survived used the power of Holy to defeat Jenova and quarantine her inside the Northern Crater. Jenova would lie dormant there for thousands of years. Despite their victory over the "Calamity from the Skies", the Cetra civilization was lost, and their numbers dwindled down to almost nothing. Mankind took over the role that Cetra, whom they called "Ancients" had played, and started their own civilization. As time wore on, humanity forgot about Jenova and the Ancients fell into legend.

Two thousand years after Jenova's first fall onto the Planet, all memory of Jenova had faded. The Shinra Electric Power Company now ruled the Planet, using their Mako energy for great power. However, they were ever looking for a more efficient way to harvest Mako. So they looked back onto the legends of the Ancients, and thought that whatever remains of those lost people might be a useful tool. Shinra scientists and excavators wandered the entire Planet, looking for some remnant of those people.

October 10, 1959, Professor Gast Faremis excavated the creature and mistakenly identified it as a Cetra. Thus began the Jenova Project - an effort by a number of Shinra scientists to take Jenova's cells and create a human hybrid with her. One of fruits of this labor was SOLDIER, an elite military force that had greatly-expanded abilities thanks to being infused with Mako laced with Jenova's cells. Sephiroth, Genesis Rhapsodos, and Angeal Hewley were all born from the Project. Several years after the experiment began, the Project was shut-down, and Jenova was kept inside the Mako Reactor at Nibelheim.

Her current location... is currently unknown...

Ancients

The migrations of the Cetra were a Planet-reverent pursuit of the fabled Promised Land, one conducted by traveling from one area to another and cultivating life as they went. The Cetra had the unique ability to commune with the Planet, an ability which regular humans lost once they gave up their close relationship with the Planet in favor of leisure and convenience. Cetra also had the ability to guide the flow of the Planet's spiritual energy, this being the means by which they were able to cultivate life on the Planet's surface.

OOC NOTE:

Many fans incorrectly believe that the Cetra are actually an alien race which migrates from Planet to Planet. This is due to translation issues and a failure to clarify the interchangability between "land" and "planet." In actuality, the game's script states through Aeris that the Cetra were born the Planet of Final Fantasy VII, and that -- upon death -- they will return to the Promised Land. This is an obvious allusion to the return to the Lifestream, it being the Promised Land of the Cetra. This concept is confirmed by the Maiden Who Travels the Planet novella in the Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega Guide.

SOLDIER

SOLDIER is the elite fighting force of Shinra in Final Fantasy VII. They are advanced Supersoldiers, with super-human strength, speed, and agility. Much stronger than the Shinra Army but less delicate than the Turks, Shinra uses them for special missions that require the greatest use of strength. Children around the Planet dream of joining SOLDIER and becoming 1st Class like the hero, Sephiroth. Many 1st Class SOLDIERs have fanclubs based around them created by Shinra to increase the popularity of the organization and as a propaganda tool.

Year 1965, the Jenova Project was initiated to to make a human-Cetra hybrid, using the cells from Jenova (mistaken to be a Cetra) and Mako Energy from the Planet. The result was Sephiroth, a child with exceptional abilities. Shinra recognized the potential of such a powerful warrior, so a method was planned to begin a mass production of more fighters of his type.

Using similar processes, Shinra began exposing promising warriors to raw Mako and injecting them with Jenova cells (giving their eyes that unique "glow"). Only the most physically and mentally fit humans could survive the process with their egos intact, so SOLDIER became a very exclusive unit. Although still eclipsed by Sephiroth's strength and power, these new warriors called SOLDIER were given powers far beyond those of a normal combatant. They were sent on the more dangerous or important missions, had access to more equipment and information, and were higher ranked than other members of the army.

This concludes SOLDIER's relation to JENOVA. See the SOLDIER file for more details...
