Gast Faremis

Gast Faremis (ガスト・ファレミス, Gasuto Faremisu) was a researcher. He was the head of Shinra's Science Research Department. Unlike his colleagues, the later successor, Professor Hojo and Dr. Hollander, he pursued wisdom for its own sake, rather than using it to gain power.

Gast drew the wrongful conclusion that Jenova was a Cetra, and Shinra sent Hojo and Lucrecia Crescent to assist him in his research to create the Jenova Project. He and Hojo injected Lucrecia with Jenova cells, in order to make Lucrecia and Hojo's unborn child, a new race of Cetra. This child was called Sephiroth. Gast, however, regrets this decision, and leaves the project. Gast continues his research on the Cetra in his laboratory in Icicle Inn, where he meets Ifalna, the one of the last remaining Cetra.

He records the interviews he conducts on Ifalna, where he learns the truth about Jenova and the Promised Land. He later seems to have fallen in love with Ifalna, and they have a baby: Aeris, the last remaining Cetra. However, they are tracked down by the Shinra, and Hojo kills Gast trying to capture Ifalna and Aeris.

Interestingly, Faremis contains an anagram of "Aeris".

Ifalna

Around 1959-1956 Professor Gast Faremis sets out on pilgrimage searching for information on Jenova and/or Cetra/Ancients. At some point he meets Ifalna, one of the very last Cetra. In a unknown period of time they fall in love and secretly move to Icicle Inn on the Northern Continent, not officially notifying the Shinra company of their whereabouts.

In the time they lived together, Ifalna entrusts her knowledge of Cetra, WEAPONS, and Jenova, also known as the "Calamity from the Sky" to her husband. Gast tapes these moments and hides the videos in his cabin on the north continent.

Eventually Ifalna gets pregnant and has a daughter. The two lovers were overjoyed and oblivious to the world. That is until about 20 days after Aeris’ birth when Professor Hojo locates Gast and Ifalna.

When Hojo claims he needs Ifalna and Aeris for experimental purposes Gast resists and is shot by Hojo's henchmen. Aeris and Ifalna are then taken from their home and relocated to a Shinra lab.

It seems Aeris and her mother are kept Shinra's prisoners for about 7 years. Ifalna planed an escape with her daughter that did not go quite according to plan. Ifalna was hurt by Shinra employees and dies in front of a train station in the Midgar slums. Her last actions were entrusting Aeris to a nearby woman, Elmyra Gainsborough.

Weapons

The Weapons were created over 2000 years ago when Jenova fell on the planet. It is not specified if they were created autonomously by the planet, or actively created by the Cetra. Whatever the case, the Weapons succeeded in defeating Jenova and sealing her in the Northern Crater. They subsequently began hibernating in crystallized Mako, awaiting the day when the planet would be endangered enough that they would be needed to awaken. This is only a theory and has not been proven.

Jade Weapon

The Jade Weapon was awoken by the destruction of Zirconiade and set out to hunt down the Turks responsible, all of whom had since gone into hiding. The location for the fight with the Jade Weapon corresponds with the players location in Japan.

It is the first of the Weapons to be awakened from beneath the ice and possessed the ability to fly. The weapon was said to be an astonishing foe, but was defeated by the Turks. The report lacks detail and is not to believed to truly happen by many of the researchers in Shin-Ra.
