Let The Light Surround You

Midgar was failing to yield him any work. Figuring that Kalm might actually yield him some revenue, Fuse headed east for the town with the blue tile ground. The trip was boring as hell, but at least he got there with no real issues. Well, no issues aside from some very sore limbs. "Ugh...dammit, this is so annoyin'," he muttered, scratching at the back of his head. "Wish I could jus' find a job back in Midgar, I hate walkin' here...and this place hurts my eyes!" He didn't really care who heard him, as he was pretty sure that everyone who lived there felt the same way. Walking around on bright blue ground every day would drive him utterly insane, considering that where he lived was a very dull place, and it had dulled him as a result. Anything too bright was hard on his eyes, but he would get used to it. Small price to pay for finding work. Sighing, the scavenger made his way to an empty bench, plopping himself down on it and staring up at the clear blue sky. It was the first time he had seen it in quite a while, and it was a very welcome sight. Looking up at the Plate day after day had started getting to him. He picked the right time to leave Midgar. He could seek work later. Right now, all he wanted to do was relax and watch the clouds for a while. |

"Hungry...." a young girl's voice called out in the night, inside her mother's house. A loud growling stomach far out-sounded the cry of her voice. Her legs flopped to the ground below as she attempted to get out of bed. "Maybe Mom has food..." She muttered to herself as she shuffled her feet in her night gown to the kitchen, opening the cabinets. Cereal... Waffles... something delicious... Celest thought to herself as she rummaged through the pantry with one eye open. Her other eye was still sleeping, at least that's how she felt at the moment. Her logic at this early in the morning was skewed. "What...? Nothing... there's nothing but old lady food here! I can't eat this," Celest said to herself looking outside at the rising sun. "I was going to leave before Mom woke up. I've got three hours to get food, get dressed and get out," Celest said to herself as she walked back up to her room staring at her clothes. "I don't think I've had to get dressed this early in my life... ever," Celest moaned aloud as she shuffled her feet to her clothes, her stomach still growling. After the epic battle of changing clothes, Celest grabbed her sword and bag, making her way outside of the house three hours before she planned on. She planned to go get food, go back to her Mom's house and get some sleep before she left. Little did she know that most of the town was still asleep. No one was awake to serve her breakfast. "Hello? Are you open?" Celest said aloud as she found herself knocking on the door of one of the bakeries. "They're not open yet..." Celest pouted aloud as she looked around, to take in her surroundings. It was then that a young man staring at the clouds came into her vision. "Maybe... maybe he has food..." Celest said as she shuffled herself to the young man. She still walked around with only one eye open and dragged her feet along the ground making a rather odd sound when she walked. It wasn't until she was standing three feet from the young man that Celest said, "Do... you have food...?" She had the most pathetic look on her face, as if she were suffering and to top it off she sort of had morning breath. Not really bad, but one noticeable if they tried to breathe the breath she just breathed out... (breath breath breath breath breath.) |

Let The Light Surround You

Someone was talking to him. Fuse blinked a few times and lowered his head, staring at the person before him for a moment before deciding on his answer. "...Yeah, I got a few candy bars..." he said after a few seconds of silence. The girl in front of him looked absolutely pitiful. Even after growing up in the slums of Midgar, he doubted that he ever had that look on his face. It was hard for him to look at her and not feel some measure of pity. "...Come on, sit down," he said, scooting over on the bench to allow the girl to join him. As he did that, the scavenger reached into his pocket and pulled out a small rectangular bar of chocolate, which he offered to the girl. He didn't mind giving up a simple candy bar, but he definitely wanted to know where she got that impressive blade she was carrying with her. But that could wait. A name was more important than that right now. "...You got a name?" Ryan asked finally. "I'm Ryan. People call me Fuse, though. Take your pick, makes no difference ta me." The teen waited on the girls response, a faint smile on his face. In looking at her, she was pretty cute, but not really his type. Well, he didn't have a type, but she didn't fit what he was looking for in a woman. Or something. He wasn't here to look for love anyway. He had come to Kalm to get a job and nothing else. |

Celest's eyes lit up like a Christmas tree when she the chocolate bar was mentioned. Well, not like a Christmas tree, but you get the idea. She scurried over to the seat offered by the young man where he graciously handed her one of the Chocolate bars. Food... glorious glorious food... Celest thought to herself as she slowly unwrapped the candy bar's wrapping, revealing the chocolate that would start her day. It looked delicious, far more delicious than a candy bar should be. There should be a law against candy bars looking that delicious. It looks so good... Celest thought as she placed the candy bar into her mouth, biting down onto a piece. Immediately hairs on the back of her neck rose from the taste. It tasted terrible. It was awful and tasted like it had been in someones pocket for days and had gotten wet a few times. I feel like I'm going to be sick... but too hungry, Celest thought to herself as she continued to eat the candy bar, nearly crying from the horrid flavor. Note to self, buy food before leaving town... Celest thought to herself as she finished the chocolate bar. "...You got a name?" Ryan asked Celest while she swallowed the last bite of the chocolate. The question interrupted her concentration on swallowing the last bit and caused her to choke a little bit. Don't throw up, don't throw up, don't throw up! Celest thought to herself as she forced it down with a large gathering of spit. "I'm Ryan. People call me Fuse, though. Take your pick, makes no difference ta me," the boy said in Celest's silence, it probably came off as if she were ignoring him. But that wasn't the case, not at all. She was simply trying not to die from the chocolate he gave her. She felt that would be rude to do that. "Thank," Celest coughed. "You Ryan," Celest finished her statement while holding her throat. She moved her hand from her throat to her eyes, clearing the tears in her eyes from them. "My name is Celest Nameway," Celest said after gaining her composure. "I lived here in Kalm, moved to Midgar and just left Midgar yesterday to begin my journey to Nibelheim!!" Celest said, probably saying too much for one go. But that's how she was. She didn't socialize often, thus was kind of awkward at it. She wasn't sure how to start a conversation much less how to keep one going for a long period of time. She tended to say all there is to say right away. She should work on that. |

Ryan blinked at the girls reaction to his candy bar, wondering just what her problem was. Reaching into his pocket again, the scavenger snagged another bar, unwrapping it and taking a bite for himself. It tasted horrendous. Fuse coughed loudly and spat out the chocolate, letting out a loud groan as he did so. "God damn! And you ate that? Jeez, you really musta been hungry..." With a sigh, Ryan stood up and threw the remainder of his own candy bar out toward the wilds. As soon as he had accomplished that, he plopped back down on the bench, coughing once again. "Jesus...I'm really sorry about that," he said, apologizing to the girl. "Guess I had those a little longer'n I thought..." The girl provided him with an answer to his question, but then continued on, providing him with her entire life story. The scavenger blinked at Celest and gave her an odd smile before saying anything else. "Nibelheim, huh? What's waitin' for you in Nibelheim? Last I heard the place burned to the ground, some kind of accident or somethin'. Not sure if anythin's there 'cept for a bunch of ashes, but then I don't keep up with stuff like that. Might be good as new now." |

"Someone suggested it to me," Celest stated. It was a simple reaction, very straight forward. There wasn't much else behind her desire to go there outside of just wanting to. "OH! But I do have to go to Cosmo Canyon to get wings first!" Celest said almost shouting. "Well... sort of, I have my wings right now but they don't work, so I have to go there to get them to work because..." Celest began to mumble, realizing she wasn't making much sense the way she was now. She sighed to herself and reached for her bag which hung off of her shoulder. "These!!" Celest said as she pulled out what looked like a back-plate with two numbs on them. She unfolded the nubs for it to reveal two long metal wings made of Iron. "These are my wings. I'm making a machine that will let me fly!! It will be so much fun!" Celest nearly shouted with excitement. "But the wings wont work without the engine, fuel and..." Celest began to pause. She had forgotten the parts she needs for it to work already. "I can't remember... what was it I needed again? Engine... fuel tank..." Celest mumbled as she scratched at her chin, as if she were in another world entirely. "OH! A 'body' or whatever that is. It's supposed to make it look like I'm just wearing a shirt made of metal or something like that," Celest said aloud with a smile. "So... why did you come.." Celest paused, folding the wings back up. "Here?" she finished her sentence with a bit of struggle, placing the wings back into her bag. |

This girl was definitely an odd one. There was almost too much innocence about her, and that fact alone was enough to make Ryan chuckle at her. Of course, he was a little cynical, but Celest was just so naive that it was...refreshing. He laughed quietly and turned his gaze back toward the wilds, listening idly to her explanation about why she wanted to travel to Nibelheim. Something about building a flying machine? Had he heard her right? "A flyin' machine? What...are you serious?" he asked, clearly very skeptical about the whole concept. "What use could ya have for a flyin' machine? What's out there that ya need to find?" After all, what could anyone want with a flying machine if they weren't searching for something? Fuse paused for a moment and considered the idea, noting that Celest was a very strange girl, after all. Maybe...she just wanted a flying machine? Then, the question of why he was in Kalm came up. "Work." A simple answer, but he decided to expand upon it, just in case the odd girl got curious. "I'm lookin' for a job here. Prolly won't find anythin', but Midgar is dry as a bone right now, and I kinda need the gil...there's someone I need ta find, and I heard he was on his way toward Junon or somethin'..." Maxmillion Vister's face popped into the scavengers mind, and his jaw ached vaguely at the memory of the man who had put him down for the count a few days ago. Revenge was still on his mind, and if he could put the hurt on the man in red, then that would more than make up for the injustice he had suffered. He blinked a few times, seeming to realize that he had suddenly put on a rather serious face. That didn't suit him, and he quickly reverted back to the expression he had on his face while Celest had been talking. "Er, sorry, I kinda zoned out there for a second. You say anythin'?" |

Celest calmly listened to everything Fuse had to say about his situation. She sat calmly, watching him as he zoned out too. It was rather fun watching people, in a non creepy way of course. People are just so very interesting, they intrigue Celest and make her very curious about how they tick. It was then that Ryan drew Celest's attention again by apologizing to her. He was very sincere and explained himself before asking her a simple question, "You say anything..?" "I... don't remember," Celest said, her eyes wide. She couldn't recall if she had said anything to Ryan in those moments. She was drawing a blank entirely. She felt odd that she couldn't remember it. "Umm... on another note," Celest paused for a second. "If you're looking for a job, I hear that they are hiring a maid in the Hotel... never mind," Celest looked away remembering that the job of a Maid usually goes to a lady. She looked over at Fuse up and down quickly. He's definitely not a lady, Celest thought to herself, blushing slightly. "Umm the Bakery needs a young man with good legs to deliver food to the elderly who can't make it to the store: they call the shop, order and they deliver. I used to work there when I was younger," Celest said again, thinking about it for a second. "But then... I'm not a young man, so I guess that they'd hire a young lady too..." Celest placed her hand on her mouth looking over to Ryan again. "No! I mean, I don't mean... you're not a young lady... I!" Celest paused for a moment before standing up from the seat. "Thank you for the Candy bar!" Celest shouted as she bowed, blushing from embarrassment. Her hair flopped over her shoulders as she stood back up, not looking at Ryan in the face. "If you want, I'll... put a word in for you at the Bakery or the Inn... if you're interested," Celest said, too embarrassed to look him in the eye. In fact, I can go do that now... Celest thought to herself wanting to disappear almost. If only she could just teleport away from the area to save herself from the embarrassing moment she put herself in. |

She just became stranger and stranger the more he talked to her. There was something oddly appealing about that, though. Maybe it was because he was so used to dealing the complete and utter assholes on a daily basis that made conversing with Celest that much more intriguing. After all, he couldn't recall ever meeting anyone who couldn't remember if they had said anything. She seemed a little tense now, though, and he really wasn't sure why. The prospect of work came up, but from what he had heard, neither job really catered to him. But work was work, and he was pretty light on his feet, so the whole bakery thing definitely worked out in his favor. Still, he wasn't a delivery boy, even though most of his other jobs were retrieval operations. He figured that if his other prospects didn't pan out, delivering bread might not be a bad way to get some quick cash. Besides, he hated cleaning. Suddenly, Celest was on her feet, leaving Ryan with a confused expression on his face. He had heard her say something along the lines of him not being a lady which only served to further muddle the situation. The scavenger scratched at the scar on his nose and smiled at the girl, trying to decide on the best way to calm her down. The opportunity seemed to present itself when she thanked him for the candy bar. He decided to use that to try and help her relax some. "Yeah, no problem," he said, giving a quiet chuckle. "Tell ya what, though...you still hungry? I'll buy ya some breakfast if ya are. No sense traveling on an empty stomach. 'Sides, I need somethin' ta get the taste of that thing outta my mouth." Fuse got to his feet after that statement, patting Celest on the shoulder as he moved past her. "Dunno if anythin's open yet, but I'm not in a hurry. You can pick where we eat, all right?" |

"Yea... that'd be nice," Celest said with a smile as she thought about the feel of warm tasty food in her belly. But she couldn't think of any place being open yet. It was rather early in the day and most people are just waking up. It was then that Celest remembered one place in Kalm that was always open and always had food this early. She used to deliver bread to them late at night for them to use in the morning when she worked at the Bread Shop. A wide smile etched across her face as she grabbed onto the wrist of Ryan, dashing off towards the entrance of town. "The Inn!! They have breakfast!!" Celest shouted as she did a skipping run-like motion towards the building at the entrance of town. It was rather strange how suddenly she changed her personality when it came to food. She was used to starving herself because of living in the Slums. Now she didn't have to, it was a rejuvenating feeling to be able to eat whenever she wanted to rather than starve herself because she had no choice. "We're almost there Ryan!!" Celest said again almost shouting to the world as the approached the Inn's front door. Celest stopped out of breath outside of the Inn with her hands on her knees heaving to herself. She wasn't used to random bursts of energy like that when she was hungry. It was a very Goku thing of her, but being hungry made her feel incredibly weak. But unlike the hero of another world, it didn't make it her stronger or anything, just not hungry. "Door... in reach... must get... food!" Celest said lifting one hand off of her knee towards the handle with eyes wide open. Yes! Celest shouted in her mind as she began to pull on the door handle, opening the door slowly. Her smiled widened as the smell of warm food stretched out from the inside of the Inn and towards the two outside. Celest's jaw dropped as she said, "I smell... Muffins..." |

Just mentioning food turned the girl into some kind of super being. She grabbed his wrist so hard that it almost hurt, but he didn't have any time to object to her doing that. She dragged him over the blue tiles toward the local inn. A moment later, she had forced her way inside, and the scent of freshly baked muffins filled his nostrils. He could see why she liked it here. "Ha...does smell really good in here..." he said quietly, taking a look around the inn. He'd never actually been inside before, so this was a first for him. He just hoped that the food tasted as good as it smelled. Of course, there was only one way to find out. Ryan moved to the nearest counter, grabbing the attention of the man behind it with a tap of the bell that had been provided. "Oh ho ho, what have we here?" the man said, looking from Fuse to Celest and back again. "Ah, young love. It's so nice. I guess you'll be wantin' a room. Just try to keep the noise down, we do have other guests." Ryan stared at the man for a moment before realizing that he was attempting to glare a hole through the moron's skull. "...We ain't a couple," he growled, hoping at the idiot got the point. "We just wanna eat breakfast. How much is that gonna cost me." "Oh. Fifteen gil for the two of ya. All you can eat." Fuse slipped his hand into one of the many pockets on his pants and produced the requisite amount of gil, tossing it to the man without saying a word. Once the transaction was completed, the scavenger turned back to the strange one, offering an apologetic smile. "Well, Celest, go nuts. Just make sure ya leave some for the other people, all right?" |

Celest nodded quietly to Ryan as she walked over to the table with the food on it that the Inn-Keepers had so nicely prepared for everyone to eat. Without hesitation she grabbed the first muffin in her eyesight which happened to be a banana nut muffin. They were always the best to Celest, so much that she focused her entire being on eating that muffin. She held it with two hands to her face, biting at the Muffin with her tiny mouth. I love banana! Celest thought to herself as she smiled to herself, eating at the muffin as if it were the last one on earth. Celest paused for a moment, looking up at Ryan who was hopefully eating. She swallowed the bite of muffin she had in her mouth before saying, "Thank you... Ryan. I appreciate this." Her voice had changed slightly from before, she was much more clam and had a sincere tone in her voice. She was trying to be as polite and respectful as possible about it. She wasn't used to accepting things like this from people, she in fact hated depending on people for anything. So she wanted to make her gratitude worth something when she expressed it. But odds are she tried too hard since she is an over-achiever when she sets her mind on something. Celest smiled and turned her attention back to the Muffin which she was enjoying greatly; especially since she had been living off of rations for a year in the slums. This was a high class meal compared to what she was eating, especially since it was freshly cooked. Not to mention the smell was exhilarating. This is wonderful, I missed good food, Celest thought to herself, tears almost swelling in her eyes. I don't think I've eaten this early in a long... early... what time is it? Celest thought to herself as she swallowed the last bite of the large muffin she was biting at. She quickly reached into her bag to pull out her cell phone, flipped open. The time on her phone read "6:37 AM" which was really early for Celest. "Ugh... I didn't even think, no wonder everything is closed," Celest said to herself. She began to look around the room as she began to think back to the night before. That's right, I didn't go to sleep until about two in the morning last night. I didn't get home until really late and Mom wanted to stay up all night talking, Celest thought to herself. Celest let out a brief sigh to herself as she grabbed a handful of tiny doughnut holes and cramming them in her mouth. "Hey, Ryan!" Celest said to grab his attention. The second he looked at her he would see a flash of light from Celest's phone as she took a picture of him. "There, now I'll remember what you look like. I wont be in Kalm again for a long time so I might not ever see you again after today," Celest said to Ryan. "What's your number? That way I can text and call you when I get bored!" Celest said with excitement in her voice about the matter. Even though she has had her phone since she was about sixteen she hasn't actually used it like everyone else until recently. She's catching up with the phone fad a little late. |

"Well, you're welcome," the scavenger said as he snagged up some muffins for himself, making his way to a small table in the corner of the inn once he was ready to eat. He wasn't really that hungry, but he would feel a little awkward if the girl ended up eating more than he did. Of course, the muffins were pretty damn tasty. One wouldn't hurt him. The flash blinded him momentarily, but he quickly recovered from the shock of having his picture taken. Fuse blinked a few times to clear the spots from his eyes, a little annoyed that she had decided to do that so suddenly, but he wasn't angry. In fact, there was a smile on his face, but it was different than the one he had forced himself to put on after he found himself thinking about Vister earlier. No, this was the smile he reserved for when he was happy. She was asking for his phone number. Ryan scratched at the back of his head, wondering if he should volunteer that information so readily. After all, he just barely knew her, and in his line of work, the fewer connections he had, the better. He didn't want her to get hurt just because she knew him. Still, she was nice enough, and she was going in the opposite direction, leaving him far behind. What was the harm? "Er...yeah, sure. Number's 555-2112, but the only time I really use my phone is when I'm waitin' on a job to call me, so don't get mad if I don't answer, okay?" |

"I wont get mad, I'm not really good at the whole phone calling thing. I always feel awkward while talking on the phone cause I like to make body motions. Then people see me making random motions while on the phone with someone and then I feel weird," Celest said, probably stating far too much information about herself and her issues with phones. She scratched at her chin for a second with a smile as she began to put the number into her phone. "There, now you will be raided with Text messages when I am bored," Celest said with a smile as she began to write one in the phone while standing right in front of Ryan. She hit the send button, grabbed her things and began to walk towards the door. She smiled at Ryan, waved at him and left the Inn. Just seconds later Ryan's phone would have rang, vibrated or done whatever it is he has his phone set to do when it receives text messages. When he got around to opening it, he would see that it is from a number not in his phone. It would be obvious that it was from Celest. When he clicked 'Read Message' he would see exactly what it was that Celest sent to him. It would also become apparent that she is able to text really fast. 'Thank you for the food Ryan. It was nice to meet you but I have to go now. I wanted to leave town before my mother woke and I fear that time is coming far closer than I thought. My number is... wait it should say in the sent area. Oh well... thanks -Celest' It was quite shocking that she was able to write all of that within a thirty second period of time on her phone. She must have begun writing it the second she took his picture. Regardless, Celest was long gone now. She was beginning her adventure... or so she hoped. Odds are she'd get distracted a few more times before truly leaving. In fact, she didn't realize that she had left something in her mothers house that she sort of needed. Like... her money. "Oh Crap!" |

She had just walked away without so much as a goodbye. Ryan almost couldn't believe his eyes, but he had already decided that she was a very strange girl, so her behavior didn't really shock him as much as he thought it might. Of course, if he had been paying attention, he'd have noticed that she had been doing something on her phone before she left. Suddenly, his pocket was vibrating, an indication that his phone was going off. "Who the hell..." he muttered, slipping his hand into his pocket and grabbing his phone, which he promptly flipped open. The display showed him that he had a new text message from a number he didn't recognize. Blinking, he opened the message, reading it over quickly. It put a smile on his face. "...What a weird girl..." said to himself as he took another bite of his muffin. A few button presses stored her number, and a few bites finished off his breakfast. His phone was back in his pocket a moment later, and he was alone in the inn, aside from the idiot behind the counter. After spending a few minutes by himself, his phone went off again. Had she sent him another message already? If she was going to do that all the time, he would probably have to block her number. Fuse pulled his phone out again and took a look at the screen. It wasn't Celest, which was fine, but he wasn't at all pleased with who had called him this time around. With a quiet groan, he pressed the answer button and placed the phone to his ear. "The fuck do you want, Gene..." "Hey hey, you really need to relax, Fuse," the voice on the other end of the line said. "I have another job for ya, you know." "I'm in Kalm, and I really don't feel like walking back to Midgar today." "Oh, you're already there? Good. I have a client who wants you to pick up some bread for hi-" Fuse closed his phone and put it back in his pocket, cutting Gene off before he could even finish that sentence. He wasn't going to play delivery boy for that asshole. He wasn't that desperate. It looked like he'd be in Kalm for the rest of the day. |
