Chris had spent the night over in the small town of Kalm. At first, he wasn't sure where he was to sleep. It would have been late at night by the time he would reach Midgar, which meant the chance of a monster attack was higher than it would be in the daytime, and he'd probably have to deal with the night guards not letting him in so late at night. Fortunately, he soon found a family who was willing to take him in for the night.

The next morning, Chris thanked the family for their hospitality and headed out. Chris wandered around the town to see if there was anything he could do to help the people, if even to repay for the family's kindness. However, most of the town's concerns seemed to revolved around the monsters preventing travel into and out of the town, and the monsters that came into the mine and scared off all of the workers there. Such tasks, Chris didn't feel he could do on his own yet.

"Hmm..." Chris said to himself, "Not much I can do. Maybe I should check and see if I can get someone to help me out. Two or even three working together can take challenges one alone cannot, as I've experienced for myself. However...Maybe there's something here that I can use." Chris then headed to a small set of wooden buildings that represented the entirety of the town's commercial facilities. More specifically, he was heading for the Materia shop to see what their inventory was.

Once he got into the store, he inquired about what was available. The shopkeeper showed four gems, three green and one yellow. The shopkeeper gave a brief description of the four. Chris was quick to decide, asking the one yellow gem. The shopkeeper gave the price: 250 Gil. Not too bad, considering it needed an additional investment of at least 300 to have any use at all, an investment he had already made beforehand. Chris gave the shopkeeper the money, then nodded and said, "Thank you." The shopkeeper replied similarly, then added, "We haven't gotten too much business with all the monsters running around."

Afterwards, Chris put the Materia into the empty slot in his spear and looked for someone to help him help the people with their monster problem.

Chris was already up and moving around the inn near the mines, trying to shake off the sore muscles from yesterday. 'Phoenix' really gave him a work out, trying to grab that Materia wasn't the easiest thing he's done. He grabbed his shield from the corner, strapping it on his back so he'd have easy access. He headed up the stairs from the basement, walking towards the door so he could go to his normal spar with his 'teacher'. But before he walked out, he noticed a new flier on the bulletin board near the front door. A pack of Bandersnatches were attacking citizens coming and going from the south gate. He kept reading:

"Wanted
Someone to eliminate those blasted wolves attacking people at the south gate. Traffic was already slow because of the monster attacks, but now we have to worry about such creatures at our front gates? Will pay upon extermination of the fiends, as well as proof of their demise."

Chris read the name of the one who issued the request. It wasn't anyone he knew, so it's a good chance they wouldn't know about him through his parents. He'd just have to keep his real name hidden, his parents shouldn't know he was back in town just yet. He glanced over his shoulder at Jamie walking down the stairs. "Hey, let Phoenix know that I'm going to be taking it easy. I'm going to be practicing on some wolves." He quickly walked out the door before Jamie could answer, knowing she'd probably ask several questions before letting him go. He even ducked behind a building just as Jamie opened the door again, and he could only smile when he felt her frustration with him. He'd done this several times growing up, but the later years it was because of his fear of girls that he hid.

Walking down the street, Chris began thinking about the bounty on the dog like monsters. He never fought a monster before, this would be his first time. He wasn't even sure if he could take another creature's life. Fighting the woman a few days ago wasn't really a fight to the death, and he held back from trying to kill her. But this was going to be a fight to the death, and Chris wasn't too sure how he felt about it. The more he thought about it, the more it made sense that he'd kill them. They were hurting humans right outside the city, and in a human's eyes human life is more important than a monster's. With a smile, Chris changed his thoughts to a different subject. How to eliminate the creatures effectively. His mind was already putting the pieces on the chess board, as he began his round about walk to the south gate.

He stopped just inside the gate leading out when he heard someone asking about dealing with the monster problem. From what Chris could piece from the inquiry, the guy was looking for someone to to help him fight some monsters. Chris wasn't too sure what kind the guy meant, and if he meant the Bandersnatches then Chris might need some help. He turned and headed for the youth. "You looking for someone to help fight the wolves?"

It wasn't soon after Chris had said that he needed some help that someone had approached him with such an offer. The young man resembled him somewhat, with the only major differences was that the young man was a few inches taller than he was, and dressed in slightly darker colors. "If you're talking about those wolf-rat things, then yeah, I could use some help." Chris said, "I really know only two things about them: They're faster than I am at the moment, and they've given a lot of travellers and a lot of this town's residents a whole lot of grief."

Chris grasped his spear, then introduced himself. "My name is Chris Murray, resident of the neighboring city of Midgar." Chris paused for a second, then said, "Now, this leads to the question of how to take down those monsters. Perhaps one of us can get their attention and the other comes in to strike. I'm pretty good at taking hits, or at least I should be, given how I've taken more than my fair share of hard knocks in the past month."

Chris looked at the stranger with a slightly raised eyebrow. It was the first time someone introduced themselves like that, especially from the city of Midgar. Most people from the city are usually either quiet or boastful, some almost looking down at how small Kalm was compared to Midgar. It only bothered Chris when people thought Midgar was superior to Kalm, which this guy definitely didn't. He gave a smile and extended his hand. "My name is Chris also. Chris Seenter."

Looked like this guy was more focused on fighting the monsters than he was at introductions, so Chris quickly withdrew his hand. He glanced the guy over, as well as the weapon he carried. His eyes fell to the two Materia imbeded into the weapon, only able to make a mild guess as to what they were. A possible attack, with a support linked by the design. What either were, Chris had no clue. But he made a mental note on it as he focused on the guy again.

"Good idea, but bad idea. It's good because it can gather them in one place for an easy hit. But if the numbers are too high, then the person doing the distracting is going to be over powered before the striker can help him." Already Chris was creating a mental chess board with what he knew and guessed about the guy and the monsters. If it was a classic pack of 3-4, then the plan might work out. But most travelers can outrun or defeat such a small pack. So it had to be closer to 5-6, which meant that the person acting decoy would have to be very tough. Or have a shield like Chris's.

Turning his attention back to the guy, Chris smiled. "The best plan we have is to find them first. After that, then we can decide on a plan. But going in with just a risky plan puts us at a disadvantage." He motions towards the gate, glancing at the guard who was stationed at it. "Lets see where the people were attacked, then we can decide a plan. Better to have a good plan with as much information in as little time as possible, then it is to have a plan on a shaky understanding over a long period." He then took the lead, heading out the gate first and towards the direction of the Bandersnatch attacks.

So the young man's name was also Chris. This meant that they'd probably end up referring each other on a last-name basis at least once. Seenter had declared Murray's plan a bit too risky, on the chance that there would be enough of them to take him down before either one could mount a counterattack. "Hmm...good point. We're not told how many we're up against." Chris said, "I can't do much more than weaken each one in a situation where we're outnumbered and need to do damage in a hurry."

Chris followed the young man towards the gate, where hopefully more information would be found. "Okay, so we'll probably have to pick them off one by one, but chances are that they won't just line up and let us do that." Chris said, "We're going to have to plan carefully, and maybe hope they're only effective at a certain range, so that we can soften them up before they can retaliate. I take it you don't know much about their weaknesses?"

Chris gave a shrug as Murray followed. "Probably as much as you know. This is my first time fighting a monster." It's true that Chris hated going into a battle without any information, but he learned from his mother that most times you're not given that chance. Most fights are either spontaneous or the information is incomplete. The best way to fight is to get as much information as possible at the beginning of the fight, and plan accordingly. An opponents opening move is always the most important, as it shows what will happen next. It was just like chess, which Chris found out with the fight against the woman a few days back. Thinking back, Chris really wished he remembered to bring the Materia he snagged from Phoenix.

"In all honesty I only know what they look like. I don't know how they fight or what abilities they might have." He glanced back at Murray. "So what kind of fighter are you? I'm more of a mid range fighter myself, though I like to plan before I attack." Chris glanced at the Materia stacked on the spear, very curious about what they may be. They might be able to help them, or may just be a hinderance if they turned out to be useless in the upcoming battle.

"So...not at all. This would be my first time around as well." Chris said, "As for my style, I'm mostly a close-range fighter, but I've got a few tricks up my sleeve, one in the form of Fire magic, and I can do six, maybe seven casts with my magic reserves. I CAN use one of those as an area-effect attack, but only one. The other is reserved as a sort of a desperation move, meaning I can't use it until I get kicked around a few times. Without any sort of medical support, which I should probably think of getting pretty soon, I'll probably get two shots of that, three if I'm lucky, before falling."

"So in short, we're hoping those things have an aversion to Fire." Chris said, "But even then, I still do more damage up close, at least to one target. The problem is we don't know how many we're up against, and we have no way of gauging the comparative power and endurance levels between us and them. Let's hope they don't outnumber us by a ratio greater than three to one. That is, there are no more than six of them for the two of us to take on."

Chris had no idea what Murray was talking about. He understood using Fire magic, knowing enough about Materia to guess that the green one on the spear was that. But when Murray started talking about area-effect and a desperation move, Chris was left in the dust. In a way Chris sort of guessed that the blue Materia might be an All Materia, judging by what Murray said area-effect. But he couldn't for the life of him even guess what Murray meant by 'magic reserves' or his 'desperation move'. But he figured he'd at least see it once and be able to plan around it for the second or third time..

"I guess, I never really used magic myself. I mostly trained in using this shield as a weapon." Chris took the shield off his back to show Murray as they walked. "The edges are sharpened so it can be used to slice like an axe, and with the chain on the back I can throw it up to 20ft. and call it back." He put the shield back on his back, letting out a small sigh. Now he REALLY wished he had the Materia he grabbed from Phoenix. He never took it with him because it wasn't strong enough to analyze Phoenix, and he didn't think he'd be monster hunting today. "Oh well, at least I'll get a chance to see how a Fire Materia works."

They continued walking for about a mile when Chris heard something up ahead. He motioned for Murray to follow quietly, then snuck up behind a tree and peeked around. The sounds of low growling and sounds of animals eating pointed him in the direction of where the monsters were. In a way he was surprised to see the pack of Bandersnatches so close to town. Most monster avoided towns in a 5 mile radius, primarily because they get killed if they get too close. But this pack seems to not care, or at least think it's big enough to get closer without a problem. Chris sneaked a little closer to them, moving within 300 ft to them. He motioned for Murray to stay back as he watched the creatures eating what looked like an elk.

Chris closed his eyes slowly, bringing forth the chess board in his mind and arranging the pieces. He opened his eyes again and began watching the creatures. Their movements suggested a close range fighter, mostly by their physique and how they moved while they ate. But something about their mouths made Chris nervous, like they were hiding something or maybe had a ranged attack using their mouths. Chris added that thought to the chess board, though it might not be anything. Their fur looked like it could be burned, so Murray using his Fire Materia would work. But with the plants and trees all around it might be best to fight them in the clearing up close than from a distance. Chris began to arrange the pieces according to his observation, then slowly backed away from the tree and back to Murray. He motioned for Murray to follow him, and walked far enough away that the Bandersnatches couldn't hear them and he could still peek at them from behind a tree.

"From what I could see, they're mainly close range fighters. They're fast, and strong by looking at their legs and body. I don't know if they are faster than us, but they might be. 5, maybe 6 by my count, and they seem to be occupied eating a deer or an elk." Chris sighs, moving the pieces in his mind quickly as he tried to form a plan. Murray's plan on running in there and drawing their attention was still on the table, but if the monsters were faster than Murray or Chris then that would make things more difficult. Chris glanced at the trees that surrounded them, then back at the monsters. They were almost done eating. "I'm going to move over there behind that tree I was hiding behind before. Can you cast your Fire from here?"

Seenter showed waht he was capable of: His shield doubled as a throwing weapon, with an effective throwing range of twenty feet, meaning his 'basic' attack had much better range than Chris's own. "So...if I get locked in battle, he could come in from one side and knock the enemy away, possibly with enough time to land a second before the creature can catch him, or I can land a hit of my own while it's distracted." Chris thought to himself.

The trail led them to a wooded area, giving them some places for cover and concealment. It was then that Seenter seemed to notice something, something that Chris didn't. Chris decided to follow Seenter until the young man signalled him to stay back until he could get a better look at the situation. From what Chris could guess, they were a few hundred feet away from their quarry. The beasts themselves seemed to have taken down some prey to feed themselves with.

After a little while, Seenter motioned for him to come in a bit closer, then gave a report. There were around five of them, and indeed, they could be a threat if all of them were allowed to get too close all at once. Seenter's course of action was for Chris to snipe one of them with a Fire spell. However, from this range, Chris didn't feel like he could reliably get one from this far away. "I haven't really tested my best range, but I don't think I can get much better than fifty feet, much less fifty yards." Chris whispered, "But still, it's worth a try anyway. I probably won't get a chance to use up all my magic energy in the course of the battle, given I can hit faster and harder at melee."

Chris then brought his spear almost up to his face, pointed end away from him, of course, and pointed towards the closest Bandersnatch in the pack, focused his power, and sent a fireball at it. Chris maintained his focus the best he could, hoping to get it to go all the way.

Crap! Murray jumped the gun with the attack, not even giving Chris a chance to tell him his plan. Tactics didn't seem to be Murray's strong point, and Chris made a mental note on the chess board. It gave Chris little time to react, darting to the left to avoid being seen before running up. He moved as quickly and quietly as he could, but it was very obvious that the fireball was faster. With the monsters busy finishing their meal, the fireball found its target very quickly. Chris watched as the creature yelped at the fire scorching its fur, running out in sort of a panic. The other monsters looked a little startled, then tried to find where the attack came from. One spotted Murray in the woods, and gave pursuit.

Chris only hoped he could get into position in time, ducking behind a tree close to the path the wolves would take. He hurriedly put his shield on his arm as the first wolf sped past. The other three ran after it, obviously riled at seeing a fireball coming from nowhere. The one with its fur burned was too busy rolling on the ground to give chase, which Chris figured would happen. Fire was effective, but there was nothing Chris could to to let Murray know now. The other three Bandersnatches were bounding past Chris's hiding spot, and Chris threw his shield as hard and as fast as he could at the last one. It hit its mark, causing the last one to stumble and do a forward flip from the sudden attack. The middle one stopped when it saw the attack, then turned to Chris bearing its teeth. "Crap, I was hoping to only deal with two of them. Murray you better hurry with those other two."

Chris didn't even have time to think more along those lines, because the healthy one made a running jump at Chris. Chris managed to get his shield up in time to block the creature from taking a bite out of his head, only to be pushed onto his back by the creature's weight. He threw it off his shield, only to have to block the one he just decked from taking a bite out of his arm. The first two were still running at Murray, while the one with the burned fur managed to put out the fire with a whimper.

The fireball made its mark, causing the one that it hit to reel back in pain, and the other four to give chase to Chris a few seconds later. "Mmph...figures the whole pack would go for us at once. The pack mentality is useless if they don't work together in every appropriate situation." Chris thought to himself, "We'd better not separate too far from each other either." Rather then try to go back into hiding, Chris came out into the open, straight into the beasts' path, with his spear in a defensive position. A pretty risky move, if it weren't for the fact that Seenter drew the attention of two of them, effectively splitting the pack in two.

The first one lunged at Chris, who made an attempt at hopping back to make the beast fall short of its mark, but with little success. Chris was fortunate not to be knocked over by the attack, but he was knocked back a fair distance. Chris quickly returned with a leaping strike of his own, and managed to get a good hit off of the beast before it could react. However, the second one was not far behind and attempted to get an attack of its own. "Better take care of these guys quickly, before that last one catches up." Chris thought to himself, "Whether we should try to get back together or keep them seperated..."

Chris kept blocking one attack after another, as the Bandersnatches kept lunging at him one after the other. The first almost managed to get a piece of Chris's arm, but slicing with the shiled along its body made it back off. Chris managed to jump backwards a little, breathing heavily as the monsters began to circle him. This was definitely not a good idea, and Chris was only now realizing it. They were much faster than himself, and Murray seemed to have his hands full as well with the other two. It might have been better to go with Murray's plan than his own, though Murray would have been over taken before Chris could help.

The first creature, the one that was burned, shook it's body to ease the pain. It then began to charge after Chris, being the closest one and suspect of using the fire. Chris cursed under his breath, trying to bring his shield to defend against the new attacker. "Chomp!" The healthier Bandersnatch managed to sink its teeth into Chris's left leg, then jump back as Chris swung his shield. Chris fell to one knee, holding his leg that was now bleeding. He parried an attack from the monster he clocked before, and pushed off the one with the burned fur before it could land an attack. He shifted the shield to his right hand, and the handle in his left. This was getting dangerous, and he couldn't focus on the chess board to make a good plan. He needed to make the time.

Chris threw his shield at the uninjured Bandersnatch with all his might. The creature was already tensing its muscles to make another lunge, and didn't expect the shield to be thrown. It took the attack full force, getting thrown back as Chris flicked his wrist and twisted his body. The one with the burned fur took the chance with the shield gone to try and make an attack of its own, but Chris already figured it would. He twisted his body out of the way as the monster made a lunge at where Chris's body was. Chris's now retracting shield hit it right in the back of its head, throwing it head over heels past Chris and hard into the ground. The third creature tried to make an attack as well, only to get hit with a wild punch as Chris finished rotating his body.

All creatures were down temporarily, and Chris jumped back from them with his shield held up defensively. He slowly focused on the chess board in his mind, playing the pieces that have been played. He wasn't realy able to see what Murray was up to, but what he did see he played those pieces as well. He almost came up with a plan to regroup, when the three Bandersnatches recovered and opened their mouths. Chris watched, stunned as some sort of energy came from their mouths and headed right for him. Took late to dodge, Chris held up his shield to block. His shield took two of the hits, but the third hit his newly injured leg. He dropped to his knee, the pain too great in his leg. He looked at the creatures getting up and circling him, finally adding the final piece to the board.

Having his hands full was right. It certainly didn't help that Seenter was the one the burned Bandersnatch went for. "It won't be long before he'll be overwhelmed. I'd better take them down quickly." Chris thought to himself, then took a hop to the side closer to Seenter, "I'd rather risk drawing one of them to me than have him be overwhelmed too quickly. If he goes down, I'll fall quickly."

The two beasts approached Chris, the injured one seemingly hanging back a bit, while the uninjured one quickly rushed Chris down. Chris managed to get his spear in the precise position needed to stop the attack, essentially forcing the beast to chew on a rod of iron, something it was not prepared for. Chris pushed the monster off before it could leave any significant marks. Chris watched the two that had marked him.

The one in back seemed to be making its move, opening its mouth and revealing it was capable of some degree of distance combat, via a smallish magic projectile. Chris couldn't determine if it had any particular element, but he could tell it had a limited degree of homing ability...and a limited enough speed for Chris to evade reasonably easily. Chris led the projectile to the left, then leaped forward and to the right, and in the process smacked the monster who had tried to bite him.

However, the beast didn't like that at all, and quickly retaliated, sending Chris staggering backwards. At this point, the two beasts seemed evenly hurt, having taken one hit each, and Chris not much less so, having taken two of his own.

Chris slowly rose to his feet, trying to keep all three of the monsters in his field of vision. This was going worse than he thought, even though one was badly burned and the other two were injured. It seemed like it will take a lot more to bring them down, and Chris seriously wished he brought his Materia with him. Phoenix told him it was good for situations like this, and Chris wished he listened to her. A slight smirk came to his lips as he thought of this. It was good for situations like this, IF Chris could ever figure out how to use the darn thing.

The monsters were keeping their distance for now, that gave Chris time to think. He moved the pieces of the puzzle in his mind, trying to figure out what has happened up to this point. The Bandersnatch's were definitely close range fighters, and only used that blast when close range isn't really an option. That gave Chris some ideas. The one that took the fireball seemed to really hate fire, so that weakness might spread to the others as well. Murray was handling the other two, and Chris had to deal with two plus the one that was burned. That was unfair, especially since Murray offered to play decoy. Chris smiled at this as he glanced at Murray, adding in what Murray said he specialized in. "Close range fighting, a desperation move, and Fire. Wait, what else did he say about Fire? Oh, that's right. An area of effect. AREA OF EFFECT?!"

Chris remembered the Materia on Murray's spear. One was green, the other was blue. Area of effect must be the blue one, and that meant an All Materia. This was going to be tough, and Chris didn't know if Murray would hear him. But it was the one move Chris could think of that was the best, and he decided to put it to the test. He waited until one of the wolves circling passed between him and Murray, then Chris made a break in Murray's direction. The monsters instantly gave chase, proving they were indeed faster than him. But Chris didn't care, throwing his shield and pulling it back enough to keep them at bay. He aimed for Murray's right, leading the wolves next to the ones Murray was fighting. "Chris, use the Fire area of effect. Now!"

Chris stared down the two beasts for a second before they decided to start circling around him, each one in different directions. Chris toggled his focus between the two in quick intervals, waiting to see which one would jump at him. However, before either one did go for him, Seenter rushed towards him, bringing along the three monsters that had targetted him. Seenter signalled for him to launch his Fire-All attack. Chris didn't hesitate, and raised his weapon into the air before stabbing downward at the ground.

Once his spear hit the ground, a hemispheral wave of fire burst from the point of contact, eventually covering enough area to strike all five Bandersnatches, not only stopping them in their tracks, but sending them recoiling back a bit. Chris and Seenter, however, came out unscathed. As Chris got his weapon back in ready position, he saw that the blue Materia seemed to give off a dimmer shade, probably indicating that it needed to recharge, or something like that.

Chris didn't bother to stare at it for any length of time, otherwise, he would miss a chance presented to him by the beasts' vulnerability to the flames. Chris swung down at the nearest Bandersnatch, who was too busy trying to extinguish the flames to try to dodge. "Three good hits on this one so far." Chris thought to himself, "They probably won't be able to endure much more than that."

Chris hurried past Murray as he slammed down his spear, not really sure what kind of effect an All Materia would have on a Fire. He jumped forward when he felt the flames on his back, twisting in the air so he could face the monsters who were caught in the blast. The three chasing him were howling at the top of their lungs, the one burned twice was struggling to stay on his feet from the pain. They didn't have much time, if the others recovered as fast as the first. Chris shifted his shield in his hands, then threw it at the one that was burned twice. It struck it hard in the head, stunning it and forcing it to fall. It was still alive, but getting burned twice seemed to affect it pretty badly.

Chris called his shield back towards him, turning his body so it would strike one of the others that followed him. It hit it from behind, digging deep into the burned part of its skin before slicing its way back to Chris. That one was howling in pain, cringing from the shield's flight path and whimpering. The third that followed Chris recovered from the fire, making a running jump at Chris. Chris managed to get his shield back in time to knock this one to the side.

Unfortunately that left Chris open, and the second one that was fighting Murray opened its mouth and shot a blast at Chris before turning its attention back to Murray. The blast caught Chris unawares, throwing him off balance and open for another shot from the Bandersnatch Chris sliced a second time. He dropped to his good knee, the pain really hurting. He looked at the two Bandersnatch that followed him there, and the third still in too much pain to move. He needed to hit them all, but how?

Something clicked inside Chris, and his mind began to focus more. The chess board in his mind was moving quickly, arranging the pieces and moving them at a rapid pace. He found the plan, the one that will end this quickly. The problem would be if Murray would follow. Chris smirked, as he glanced at Murray. "Follow my lead!" With that, Chris charged the one that he just knocked to the side earlier. It was recovered enough to face Chris and defend itself, but Chris had other plans. He blocked the teeth with his shield, then reached down with his free hand and grabbed the monster's leg. He held on tightly, then threw the monster as hard as he could at Murray. "Batter's up!" After that, he swung his shield to knock the two around Murray away so he could have a clear shot at the thrown Bandersnatch.

After that wave, Seenter went pretty much all out, giving four of the monsters a strike each, in the process knocking out two of them, and grabbed the last one and threw it Chris's way, signalling for him to make a move. Chris had a good idea what Seenter wanted from him. Chris then gripped the end of his spear and gave a hard swing to the thrown Bandersnatch, smacking it towards Seenter's right. "Grounder towards short and third." Chris said. Regardless of how far he had smacked the beast, it wasn't getting up from that.

"Alright, now the odds are in our favor. Three hits and a flame are needed at our level to take one of these down." Chris said, then returned his focus on the remaining monsters. It looked as if each one had one more on them. The one that was still on Chris gathered what was left of its strength and charged at him once more. As it got close, however, it went and performed some sort of backflip kick at Chris. Chris was caught off-guard and struck twice by the attack and knocked down. "That, we should be careful of in future hunts." Chris said as he rolled back and onto his feet, "We're talking twice the pain here."

"Now, I told you about desperation moves, right?" Chris said, then brought his spear up and then swung it downwards, scraping the ground with it and creating a wave of energy towards the Bandersnatch that had just knocked him down, "They're basically one's 'signature techniques' that one can use after taking enough damage in a battle. I'm pretty sure there are other names for them, but they're pretty much made of whatever you can think of to reverse an otherwise bad situation." As Chris was talking, the energy wave struck the Bandersnatch and knocked it out.

"However, from what I've been told, the limitations are that stronger techniques are only realized by stronger fighters in times of greater desperation." Chris continued, "This one here is only slightly stronger than my usual attack. However, the energy for these techniques is only used up when one such technique is used, so if you have some medical support, then you can still use them if you're being healed, so long as you've taken enough damage equivalent to a certain percentage of your ability to endure damage."

Chris had no idea what Murray was talking about, but seeing the shockwave seemed to give him a basic idea of what he was talking about. The 'desperation move', was actually a build up of energy from being hurt or attacked. That build up could then be released in the form of an attack or ability. The more energy build up, the stronger attack or ability. However only stronger stronger people have the ability to unleash the stronger abilities.

Chris shifted his shield in his left hand, trying to get a feel of the energy build up that Murray was talking about. He never really thought about it before, and decided to give it a shot. He focused the energy built up from the battle into his shield, trying to ignore the fear of being hit again by the Bandersnatch. They were still in a state of chaos, so he had a little time to focus. Chris's shield began to glow, and rotate on his arm. Actually the shield itself wasn't rotating, but the energy on it was rotating and giving the effect that the shield itself was moving. It began to rotate faster, slowly moving the energy from his left to his right. It flowed across his body to his right arm, making an exact duplicate of Chris shield on his right arm. Except this shield was glowing.

"Woah!" Chris held up the new shiled curiously, not really sure what to make of it. One of the Bandersnatch made a running leap at him from the side, attempting to strike him with a double kick. Chris raised the new shield instinctually, blocking the attack as if the shield was solid. it was, it was made of solid energy. Chris only glanced at this new development, then slashed with his other shield at the Bandersnatch. This one fell from the attack, apparently too hurt to continue. That only left one for Chris and one that was burned twice and just getting up.

Chris threw the new shield at the twice burned, killing it before the shield disappeared. He already felt the build up of energy disappear, apparently once used it disappears. Only one left, and it looked a little better off than Chris. It seemed to be sizing up Murray and Chris, almost like it was not sure to continue. Chris was too inured to really continue himself, looking absolutely exhausted and hurt. This was the second time a battle brought him to this point, and it was only his second battle. He balanced himself on his feet, then threw his shield hard past the Bandersnatch. It almost looked like he missed because of bad aim, but he flicked his wrist and called back the shield directly behind the monster. He wasn't trying to hit it to begin with, he just wanted to block its escape. The shield came right back, striking the wolf creature from behind. Chris then pulled as hard as he could on the chain, throwing the creature a little in the air and towards Murray. "Last one."

Chris watched to see if Seenter was able to understand what he had explained. It seemed to take a few seconds for him to process the information, but he seemed to get a grasp of what Chris had said, and he managed to show it in the form of creating an 'energy shield', almost a copy of the shield he wielded in terms of shape. A test showed that it functioned equally well, as well. However, Chris guessed that it would only last a short while, probably one round of attacks, as it was Seenter's first one. That and he had thrown it at one of the beasts almost immediately after the block.

Chris checked the area. Apparently, one of the monsters he thought had fallen was still up. However, now being outnumbered, it tried to run off, but was blocked off and pulled back in by Seenter, for Chris to finish off. Chris was quick to respond, and stabbed the beast in its side to slow it down so that it couldn't escape, and again to make sure it was dead. Afterwards, Chris checked the scene, then said, "Okay, now, how are we going to show the people that we took these things down? Trying to carry all five of these may be a bit of a stretch. Perhaps their heads will be evidence enough...Or maybe their tails?"

Chris fell backwards, breathing heavily and holding his injured leg. Now that the fight was over, the adrenaline that coursed through his body was cut off and left him very weak and helpless. The battle was much larger than he anticipated, and a lot more than he expected. These were monsters, creatures that don't hold back and fight on instinct alone. Only now did Chris realize that the lady from before was more than likely holding back, and he realized how much of a fool he may have looked to her. He looked up at Murray as he glanced over the field, Chris looking as well.

"Taking the heads would be too much, and the tails can be confused with almost any dog's." Chris sat there contemplating what they should take. The owner wanted proof that they were indeed killed, and the heads were the obvious choices. It took Chris a few moments to think up a reasonable alternative, a slight smile coming to his lips. "But I know wolves and dogs don't have the mane. Let's shave off the mane and take the front left paw from each. That should be proof enough, don't you think?"

Seenter had his own suggestion of what to submit for evidence. Chris rubbed his chin, then said, "Okay, but that leaves the question of how to get them off. I've only got an idea for how to get the paws, but it's not a sure thing. As for the manes, actually...you know what? Unless we need each one in one piece, we can just bundle them up. I wonder if anyone uses them for some sort of material for clothing or something like that. However, the paws are more important. These things can live without their manes. Their paws...not so much."

Chris took one of the dead Bandersnatches and drove his spear just above the ankle of its left foreleg. Chris then pulled twisted the spear in various directions. However, this didn't seem to do the trick. "Hmmm...I don't think this is going to be effective enough." Chris said, "I might have to borrow your shield for this...unless you have enough strength in you to do this on your own."

Chris struggled to his feet, using his shield as leverage. He tested his footing several times before walking over to Murray, looking down at the Bandersnatch he tried to spear. He shifted his shield in his arm, then did a downward strike at the foot. It met with some resistance, but sliced right through. He pulled his shield back up, then looked at Murray with a smile. "I'm good, but my shield won't be able to shave the mane. I think if you use the spear end like a knife, you can shave them off." He then moved to the next monster, lifting his shield up, then striking down hard on the same paw. This time he moved slower in getting up, but he moved onto the next one.

Two more Bandersnatch met the same fate, though they were already dead. Chris moved to the last one, breathing heavily as he stood over it. It was taking more energy than he thought to do a simple downward strike, and even with the last one before him he was afraid he wouldn't be able to finish the task. His mind drifted back to the inn where Jamie was, and really wished that she was there with her Restore Materia. But she might not have the stomach for the battle they just fought, so it was probably a good idea that she wasn't. Chris took a deep breath, then struck the paw as hard as he could.

It sliced all the way through, as Chris fell forward. He landed on his face, but managed to roll onto his back after impact. His arm was twisted in an uncomfortable position, with his shield imbeded in the ground a little. But he didn't care. His body was bruised and bloody, his energy very weak. It took most of his conscience thought to stay awake, but even that was a struggle. He just looked up at the sky, trying to gather at least enough strength to make it back to Kalm.

Chris watch as Seenter gathered what strength he had left and managed to slice off the other four beasts' paws, giving the suggestion for Chris to use his spear to cut off the manes. "Hmm. Not sure if that'll be all that effective. My spear doesn't quite work that way." Chris said, "But still, it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot." Chris took his spear and held it far up the handle, near the head, with one hand and gathered as much of the mane of the one he was working on as he could grasp with the other.

Chris tried a couple of different methods before finding the most effective one to use. Even then, it took him a couple of minutes to gather up the whole mane. "Hmm...this'll take a little while. Hopefully other monsters won't track us...then again, there wasn't anything else in sight." Chris said as he started on the second one. This gave Chris some incentive to work faster. He was able to reduce the time for each one slightly for each one he did. Eventually, he had all five manes cut off. Chris checked one more time to see if anything approached. The area seemed clear.

Chris approached Seenter and said to him, "Okay, I think that's everything. I'll do all the carrying, unless you want to do some. If need be, I'll let you use my spear to hold yourself up."

Chris looked up at Murray with a weak smile. "Do I really look that pathetic?" He chuckled a little, then managed to roll over so his arm wouldn't twist in the wrong way as he got up. He got to his good knee first, then slowly lifted himself to a standing position before pulling the shield out of the ground. He looked over at Murray, then at the shaved Bandersnatch that lay on the ground. He let out a sigh, then began to pick up the paw closest to him. "Ya, you can carry. But I think I might be able to make it back to town without using your spear."

Chris began to collect the paws from each of the wolves, bundling them up with the manes that Murray shaved off. He seemed to move around fairly well, considering his knee was really torn up and he was hobbling around the area. Chris slipped his shield on his back around the time he gathered up the second to last paw. It was getting too heavy and difficult to keep carrying it on one arm in his condition, and he needed the other to pick up the pieces. He managed to get all the paws, handing them to Murray with a smile. "That should be it, let's head back to Kalm."

Chris nodded as Seenter was able to get up under his own power, then gathered up the 'evidence' of their rather successful hunt. Chris nodded when Seenter gave him the stuff and said he was ready to head back to the town. He started to make his way at a rather slow pace, both to make sure he doesn't trip, fall, and drop his load, and so that Seenter doesn't get left behind. Chris stopped every few hundred yards to make sure that Seenter was still with him. "In hindsight, I probably should have picked up a couple of potions before we headed out." Chris said after his third pause.

Eventually, about a half-hour, maybe a bit more, after they started their way back to town, they made it back home. "Okay, we're there." Chris said, "Now just to find the guy that put up the request and tell him that we got them out of the way."
