Angeles landed lightly on the ground and folded her wing onto her shoulder. Looking around she noticed that the land did not look much different than the desert she had just come from. The only difference was that instead of sand, there was hard packed earth and stones jutting up from everywhere. So she had gone from desert to wasteland overnight. She looked over behind her at where the sky was lightening and sighed as the golden light of the sun poured over the horizon and lit up everything. It looked like another day of waiting in the shade for nightfall. At least this time she would not have a hard time finding shade. She decided to put as much distance between her and the river as she could before it got too hot to move anywhere. However, the farther she got from the river, the greener it started to get, and the more confused she became. Eventually she stopped and looked around at the grass and wildflowers and the insects buzzing around. If it weren’t for the rocks that were jutting up from the ground dry as bones she would have thought she was back in the fields near Kalm. Angeles bent down and touched a blade of grass and looked at a butterfly that landed on a white flower. She watched it for a moment as it flapped its wings slowly then took off and fluttered around a few other flowers and came towards Angeles. She watched it with intrigue as it finally landed on her nose. She stared at it cross-eyed as it fanned its wings again, then she blinked and it fluttered slightly and landed on her shoulder. Angeles looked at it then slowly stood and looked around again. Where was she? This place didn’t make any geological sense to her. She was just in a lifeless desert and now she was standing in a prairie full of life. She would have looked at the map on her phone except that she no longer knew how to do that. So instead she carefully braided her hair again and began walking towards what looked like some water, glistening in the morning sun. Sure enough it was water, and she was thoroughly confused. Had she stepped into a mirage? Had she finally completely lost it? “What do you think little friend?” she asked turning to the butterfly that was still fanning its wings. Naturally it didn’t say anything, which made her believe that she was not completely lost. She looked down at the water and bent down and touched it, it rippled out from her fingertips and faded somewhere near the middle of the pond. She watched the water still then looked up across the pond and saw something large. Her eyes widened and she stood up slowly and walked around the pond and up a small hill and was suddenly over looking a massive herd of animals. Her eyes slowly swept along their backs, the color of brown rippling with movement just as the water had. She could hear a few of the animals calling but most of them had their heads down grazing on the grass. She was sure she wasn’t hallucinating now, and slowly let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. The animals didn’t seem to be at all concerned with her, which she thought was strange, but she didn’t dare question it lest they suddenly notice her and decide to charge. She slowly backed down the hill until the herd was out of sight, then she looked around for a good place to rest until nightfall, because she was going to have to fly everywhere to figure out where she was. She went over to an outcropping of rock that created shade no matter where the position of the sun was. She hummed and sighed as she sat down, watching the butterfly flutter away, then gently eased onto her shoulder. She could tell that she was going to be sore when she woke up but didn’t dwell on it and closed her eyes. She hadn’t realized she had fallen asleep until she awoke to a warm feeling flowing through her. She opened her eyes and blinked in confusion. Then realized that she was looking at a huge red feline paw. She jerked upwards with an exclamation and pressed her back up against the wall, trying to scramble back into it. She was looking at a crimson lioness who had beautiful amber eyes that reminded her of her own before she was changed. She stopped scrambling and studied the creature for a second before it suddenly asked, “do you feel better now?” Angeles froze and stared at it, blinking several times before words even formed into her mind and she gasped out, “yes I fell better now thank you,” that was not what she wanted to say; she wanted to say something along the lines of ‘oh my god you can talk!’ or ‘what the hell are you!?’ but that was what had come out and he creature seemed pleased by her words. The creature sat down and smiled, or what Angeles guessed was a smile and said, “I’m glad. What’s your name?” Angeles looked the thing up and down. It had red fur marred by black designs, a long tail tipped with fire, a leather collar around its neck, and a beaded pouch hanging from its neck resting on its chest, “my name’s Angeles…,” she looked again and eyed the creature warily before asking, “who… and what are you?” “My name’s Aleshanee, I’m a… leonine… I think.” “Oh… okay then.” Angeles looked around then stood up and stretched. She didn’t feel sore at all as she had expected, and her wounds didn’t hurt as badly as they previously had. Intrigued she turned her gaze to her shoulder and inspected the stitches. The wound was still there, but it was not red or infected, and it didn’t hurt as much to move her shoulder. She hummed in intrigue then turned and looked at the leonine as she began speaking again saying, “I saw you lying there and thought that you might be hurt, so I used my cure materia on you.” Aleshanee looked very pleased with herself, and Angeles had to wonder how old the thing relatively was. But as she continued to think how it was strange that an animal could talk and use materia she had to remind herself of the fight against the wooden dragon near Kalm, and the white teddy-bear that was flying around throwing thunder spells against the dragon, so shrugged and took everything in stride and lifted her coat off of the ground. “Where are you going?” asked Aleshanee looking sad that Angeles was leaving. “I’m going to Nibelheim,” she said looking down at the leonine and stopping to think, “you don’t happen to know how I get to there from here do you?” Aleshanee laughed and turned towards the north and nodded in its direction, “you’re a far way from there. It’s that way across the mountains. You’re in the wastelands above Gongaga.” Angeles smacked her forehead and groaned. Leave it to her to go the completely other direction and lose time all because of a little heat stroke. She sighed and dropped her hand then looked down at the leonine, “what about you what are you doing out here?” “I’m going to Midgar to find my brother,” Aleshanee said smiling brightly. “There’s nothing like you in Midgar,” Angeles said narrowing her eyes in confusion. Aleshanee laughed and shook her head which turned into a full body shiver that brought her to her feet, “no, no, no, he doesn’t look like me, he looks like you. My brother left from Gongaga to go to Midgar to become a hero. But he hasn’t sent a letter in a long time, so my parents agreed to let me go look for him to make sure that he’s alright. I’m having trouble crossing the river though….” Angeles nodded and looked back where the river was and hummed in thought, “how about this, you take me to where I can cross, and I’ll get you across as well. How’s that sound? Fair?” Aleshanee smiled grandly and turned to face Angeles, “you’ll really do that?” Angeles nodded, “then let’s go!” Aleshanee turned and started to take off to the north. She was very fast and Angeles exclaimed and ran after her yelling, “slow down!” Aleshanee stopped and looked behind her as Angeles caught up and put a hand on Aleshanee’s head panting, “not that fast okay? Let’s just walk, we’ve got all day,” Aleshanee nodded and smiled and began walking by Angeles’ side. Angeles looked over at the herd that was still grazing and found it odd that they were not running away. She looked down at Aleshanee and asked, “aren’t they scared of us?” Aleshanee looked up at Anegles then turned her head to look at the herd, “oh them. No, we’re not hunting. They’d be scared if we were hunting them, they’d sense it and run away, but sense we’re not, they’re okay with us.” Angeles nodded but was still confused, but decided not to question further and looked around, “you said this was the wasteland? Why is it all green then?” “We had a storm the other night, so all the plants decided to bloom while they could. Isn’t it pretty?” Angeles nodded and looked around. So she was stuck in between thinking that she was definitely crazy, or she wasn’t crazy at all, “what’s your brother look like? Maybe I met him in Midgar and know him, it’ll be easier for you to find him if I can tell you exactly where in Midgar you can find him.” Aleshanee nodded, “well, he has black hair and blue eyes, he’s tall and he’s really nice and kind and he’s funny and likes to make people laugh. He wants to be a hero and I’m sure he can be if he isn’t already,” Aleshanee looked up at Angeles with hope in her eyes as the woman began thinking about the description and hummed in thought. “Sound familiar. If he wanted to be a hero, you can most likely find him in Shinra as a Soldier.” Aleshanee nodded and looked forward again, “how fast can you run?” she asked and Angeles looked down at her in question, “the river near Nibelheim is far away, we’ll have to run if we want to get over it before the night,” it made sense to Angeles and she thought for a moment. “I can fly, I’ll be able to keep up,” and Aleshanee nodded. “Alright, race you there!” she yelled out and took off giggling. Angeles spread her wing and flew up into the sky, following behind Aleshanee who seemed to be having the time of her life down below. Angeles watched as she would occasionally deviate from a straight path to chase after bird or leap up to swat at an insect or stop completely to sniff at some flowers but she always started up again running towards the river. It was about an hour before Angeles saw it and she flew down to just above Aleshanee and flapped once. Aleshanee giggled and shook herself as the wind from the beating of her wing flowed down and ruffled her hair. Angeles righted herself and let her feet onto the ground, “we can walk from here, it will be alright,” and Aleshanee slowed down and nodded. Angeles couldn’t help but rest a hand on the leonine’s shoulder as they made their way to the river and Aleshanee rubbed up against Angeles’ leg feeling thoroughly content. It was only a few minutes before they got to the river and stopped at its banks. Angeles blinked and Aleshanee looked up at her with a questioning look waiting to see what Angeles would do. She was curious to see if the woman would pick her up and fly her across or somehow make a bridge. Angeles put a finger to her chin as her hand went into her pocket and fished out a materia. Aleshanee recognized it as an earth materia and wondered what she was going to do with it. She herself brought out her own earth materia and held it in her mouth waiting. Angeles looked down at the glowing green orb in her mouth then a thought occurred and she said, “alright, I want you to cast the spell right after I do okay? Right after I do and in the same spot. Ready?” Aleshanee nodded and waited as Angeles held out her materia and caused a fissure through the river. Aleshanee then charged her earth materia and shot the same spell in the same spot and made the fissure longer, then right after that Angeles shot her spell again and Aleshanee understood what they were doing. they were going to split the river and run through the fissure before it filled up with water. “Alright run!” Angeles yelled when the fissure finally spanned from bank to bank and the two took off running. It was difficult because the ground was wet and slick like mud but the both knew that they could not stop. Aleshanee unsheathed her claws to give her traction in the mud and Angeles spread her wing slightly for balance. It would not be long before the river climbed over the thin edge they had made together, and neither of them were particularly good swimmers. Sure enough, after only about twenty seconds water started to run down the walls of the fissure. Aleshanee exclaimed and charged forward faster, past Angeles who took it as a sign and started to fly above Aleshanee again. For once she was glad to only have one wing because two would not have allowed her to fit. By the time they were near the other bank water was splashing up from Aleshanee’s feet and getting the fur on her back wet, and it was slowing her down considerably. However she made it to the bank and started climbing up. Then suddenly there was a crash and she looked over her shoulder as the small wall of the fissure had fallen to the pressure of the water and a huge rush of water was heading for Aleshanee. She screamed and clawed her way up the bank as quickly as she could, and Angeles grabbed her collar and pulled her up just as the water crashed against the bank sending a huge wave shooting up and crashing down on the two. Aleshanee coughed and Angeles looked at her clothing and groaned, “oh, I hate being wet,” and shook herself in a similar fashion that Aleshanee sis to rid herself of some of the water. She looked over and saw Aleshanee’s tail and couldn’t help but ask, “does that thing ever go out?” Aleshanee looked up in question then looked back at her tail and hummed in thought. “I don’t know,” she finally answered and proceeded to try and blow out her tail. Angeles laughed and shook her head, then walked over and petted Aleshanee’s head and heard the creature purr happily. “Alright Midgar is that way. Go to Costa Del Sol and see if anyone will give you a ride over to Junon, then head north, that’s where you’ll find Midgar, and in the center is Shinra. Good luck finding your brother.” “Okay,” Aleshanee said and turned around, “good luck doing what you’re doing,” she said then took of running calling back, “and thank you for helping me!” Angeles chuckled slightly then turned and looked at the mountains behind her. She’d have to cross them and go northeast to get to Nibelheim, but she couldn’t seem to tear her thoughts away from Aleshanee and her quest. Angeles shook her head and spread her wing and flew upwards slightly when a thought crossed her mind, follow you dreams, and defend you honor. Angeal had not been the only one to say that, and as Zack flashed into her mind a feeling of dread came over her. She turned and flew after Aleshanee and began calling the creature’s name. Zack was not in Midgar, Zack was in Nibelheim being experimented on if he was even still alive. Angeles called again and again, flying east until night fell and she could hardly see anything. She flew down to the ground breathing heavily. She had sent Aleshanee into a dangerous part of the world for someone like her, and for nothing. Angeles felt her eyes burn and her chest hurt, and she let out a scream to the sky filled with regret and self loathing. The only thing to hear her was the crescent moon rising over the horizon. |
