Rain was always Madiline's enemy. She didn't even really know why she was out at a time like this. It was late, dark, and raining. Great. Not too many people were out. She saw the occasional passer-by, them being smart and bringing along with them either a hooded coat or an umbrella. She didn't know it was going to rain, so she didn't prepare herself. All she could do really is sit among the ground, leaning against a broken down building with an overhang of broken wood pieces and pieces of another building hanging off of it. She waited there, fiddling with her fingers and occasionally looking up to watch the large drops of rain splatter into different spots among the ground. In no time, she knew that puddles would form, and maybe even a few flooded areas if it didn't stop soon. Only bad things came out at night in a setting like this, and she knew it, too. But, with a little help from a SOLDIER she had met not too long ago, she had a few pointers on how to shoot her gun better, and she had it with her, of course. Duke was her favorite, she usually always left Daisy at home. Duke was secured in it's usual spot, hidden by her shirt tucked into the back of her shorts waistband.

A rather frantic man was approaching her from the right, about 70 feet off. She rose slowly to her feet, watching him stumble and seem to be carrying something within his trench coat. She squinted her eyes a little, him getting closer and closer to her, she cautiously and slowly reached behind her and lifted up the bottom of her shirt and gripped Duke, ready to take it out if needed. A little further back from him were a few men chasing him, yelling things that she couldn't make out just yet. He looked to her and ran past her at first, but then ran back and she gripped Duke and pulled it out of her waistband, but didn't expose him just yet. She man ran up to her and her eyes grew a little angered and bothered, not really liking him at all this close. He muttered a few things frantically, not really being able to get words out just right to make a real sentence. He placed one of his hands on her shoulder and she could feel him shaking furiously. She brought her unoccupied hand forward and pushed him off, him stumbling a little and falling to the ground, landing in a puddle. "Back off." She said rudely, him giving her a rather angered expression. He scurried to his feet and began running again, the men soon reaching Maddie, still yelling out words, like "Stop him!" and "He's stolen...Something.." She didn't know what he stole yet, and she didn't really care, though she didn't like at all that he was breaking the law.

She continued to watch the man, seeing him now grabbing a woman and pulling out a gun he had within his trench coat. He held her with his arm around the front of her neck and pointed the gun to her head, shouting a few words back at the men who were chasing him. Maddie's eyes grew wider and she pulled out Duke, still remaining under the dry spot she was standing in, careful not to get it wet. The men that were chasing him stopped and put there hands up, trying to talk the man down and into letting the woman go. He pulled back the hammer and was ready to shoot, but he wouldn't get any further with that gun. Maddie aimed and pulled the trigger, a loud echo of her guns shot went off and caught the man in the side right under the rib. He yelled out in agony and let the gun drop from his hands, it going off into the air and the woman running off. The men that were chasing him looked to Maddie, then ran up to the crook and checked him for other weapons before hauling him off.

"Not even a thank you." Maddie said under her breath, looking to the front of her gun and watching a stream of smoke come from it. She let her hands come down and she returned Duke back into the back of her waistband, then covered him back up with her shirt. "Didn't think a rainy day would be so exciting." She added, feeling rather well about herself and what she had just done.

Shane had been watching the events unfold before his eyes. That man had been caught stealing a new type of experimental materia from the science divison here in Junon. Sentry units were dispatched but he followed just in case. He was curious to see how the events would play out now that the man had taken a hostage. He did not notice the girl on the street beneath the roof he was sitting on. As the gunshot went off he knew it was over for that man had been known to be a hypochondriac. Once the men were gone, he jumped down from the building and landed in the street. He leaned his head up, enjoying the rain pouring down on his face. He was wearing his Blue SOLDIER uniform, indicating he was 3rd class. His short white hair was matted to his head from the water and his red eyes shone in the night.

He turned his gaze and looked over at the girl who shot the man and smiled. She was clearly older than him, and he laughed to himself when he notice she was wearing a white wife beater in the rain and that was the only dry spot for a few blocks, he knew cause he had been looking for one earlier. Being a gentleman however smiled at her and handed his black umbrella out towards her. It was still closed cause he hadn't been using it. Rather he was enjoying the rain on his skin (cue Natasha Bedingfield music). "Nice shot, and take this so your not stranded on this spot. Its supposed to rain few a few days and um...." he wasn't sure how to say it and his face was turning a bit red. "Your umm.....well your wearing a white wife beater and the rain won't help at all." he managed to force out, embarrassed.

Maddie didn't really care that no one said anything, she was proud of herself none the less, and that's all she really needed. She heard a few noises from above her and her view went to a rather young man who had jumped down from above her. She watched him curiously, though still kept to herself. She watched as he smiled to her, but she kept a rather blank look among her face. She didn't really take his laughter lightly, not really enjoying it and assuming it was towards her. Yes, she admitted that she was rather dumb for leaving without another to shield her from the rain, noticing the rain clouds before she had left. But, that was her own fault. As much as she hated being IN the rain, she really loved the smell of it, it made her calm. She looked to the umbrella that he offered, but didn't take it. She knew he was just trying to be nice, but she still didn't welcome people right off the bat enough to take their things. She only accepted things from others that she intended to keep, but if she did decide to leave, she'd take it and find a way to probably keep it. She raised her left brow when she looked to his face as he blushed, listening to his remark about the clothing and how it wasn't the best choice for the rain. She let out a slight chuckle, but didn't smile. "By the looks of you, I'd think that you'd rather have me not take it." She said bluntly, trying to acknowledge that he was blushing.

She turned her head towards where the man had fallen to the ground after she shot him, seeing a small puddle of blood among the ground being mixed with water and cleaning the street. She had rather large bullets, and the bullet most likely went threw him, causing an entrance and exit wound to only let out more blood. She most likely also punctured his stomach, so she was safe to assume that if he didn't reach a hospital immediately, he would die. That didn't make her feel bad at all, she was still proud of herself for protecting the peace, even if she wasn't asked to or hired to. She looked back to the boy and gave off a pathetic smirk towards him, crossing her arms under her breasts. "You saying 'nice shot' makes you sound like it was just luck." She added, being a little cocky and unwelcoming.

She looked to his uniform, having seen it many times before. She was safe to assume that he was a SOLDIER, and still only a 3rd Class one. She looked to his drenched hair as she thought more about her outfit and what he had said. If it was supposed to rain for a few more days, and IF she was stubborn enough and wanted to prove a point, she would wait under the overhang until it passed, but she really didn't want to. But still, she didn't accept the umbrella. It made her think that he wanted to take her somewhere, and she wasn't in the mood to walk really. Even with an umbrella, the rain would still hit her exposed thighs and knees, not to mention it would likely ruin her boots. She absolutely hated the feeling of rain on her bare skin, and she was willing to wait the rain out a little longer until it either grew into smaller, let annoying drops, or even stopped for a few minutes so she could walk to another overhang.

"N-no its not like that at all" he said with his blush growing deeper every second. "I-Its just you could get sick, us in SOLDIER have a tougher immune system, besides I wasn't using it anyways. I'm not some weird pervert." he said trying to defend himself. He tossed the umbrella beside her and started pacing and talking to himself "Oh man, oh man I'm not a weirdo. Man I must look so stupid right now." He sat down and rubbed his head.

"Oh um my name is Shane by the way, Shane Venta" he said extending his hand for a friendly shake. He needed a way to regain his honor somehow. He had heard rumors of people intentionally spreading rumors and lies about Shin-Ra SOLDIERS to make them seem like horrible people. (Sorry its soo short, i have to go to school in 3 hours. It will be longer next time.)

Maddie looked to him as he seemingly struggled with his words, making her smirk slightly. She watched as his face grew a more noticeable red, making her laugh on the inside. She listened to him as he tried to explain himself, raising her left eyebrow to his remark. She continued to watch him and keeping her eyebrow raised as he paced around, talking to himself. This made her laugh a bit more on the inside. She looked to his extended hand, him expecting her to shake it in a greeting. She sighed lightly, pausing for a moment and extended her hand out as well, putting it into his and shaking it, then returning it back to her. "Madiline." She said bluntly. She looked to the umbrella that laid next to her among the ground, him throwing it kicked up a little water off of it and a few droplets landing among her boots.

She looked again to where the man she shot had laid, noticing the blood had all been washed away and mixed with the rain water that made the concrete look somewhat shiny. She looked back to Shane and nodded, looking him up and down before parting her lips to speak once more, "No. You don't look like the pervert type. Though there's always potential for you to be one in the future. I've heard most SOLDIER's can be quite the lady chasers. Though they probably don't get anywhere." She said bluntly once more, chuckling softly under her breath as she attempted for a joke. She turned her attention to the rain falling, spacing out slightly. "So, you're a SOLDER, huh? How's that going for you.." She asked, although her tone didn't really make it sound like a question, she was just making idle conversation until the rain stopped.

"Probably not too well, considering he is supposed to be reporting back to Midgar. His mission here ended some time ago...and is it not my luck to just get home from a difficult mission and be sent right back out to play babysitter?"

A slightly stronger gust of wind had been the only indication of something being out of the ordinary before the deep voice of Zander sounded. He cut an imposing figure, what with being nearly a foot taller than both of the conversationalists in front of him. His hair was secured back in a thick braid and he somehow did not appear to be wet even thought it was raining heavily a mere two feet away from him. He stood underneath the rickety awning and glared down at Shane with his jade eyes shining in the darkness.

"Go back to your lodgings and gather your belongings. A helicopter is waiting to take you back to Headquarters. Dismissed."

Even in the low light, the burgundy shirt that Zander wore would be visible and would identify him as a Second Class SOLDIER; someone that outranked and outclassed Shane, in other words. The two Sentry units that appeared out of the shadows and escorted the Third Class away also proved his new found influence. He had played a key role in defeating Daze and securing the safety of the JENOVA shipment, and that participation was being recognized. It was only once the Sentries had removed Shane from the area that Zander turned to address the civilian.

"Madiline, I must say that I did not expect to find you here. What brings you to Junon on such a dreary evening?"

Maddie didn't really know what else to do besides make idle conversation with Shane and wait for the rain to stop, then probably leaving. A familiar voice rand through her ears and her attention was drawn away from the falling rain to see Zander, making her crack a smile. She looked to Shane as he spoke to him, pretty much forcing him to leave. She raised her brow, looking back to Zander from Shane and studying Zander's appearance a little more. She remembered him being different, but this time around he appeared to be taller, and a little more cold looking. Her smile faded as she looked at him, continuing to study him as he spoke to Shane. She wasn't really uneasy around him right now, but something wasn't all quite right. She noticed as he talked down to Shane, acting as if he was a mere child that disobeyed his father.

She looked to Zander's eyes after he asked her a question, not answering for a few long moments as she studied him again. She crossed her arms under her breasts and shrugged. "Just felt like a walk I suppose." She answered, having little joy in her tone. She turned her head towards the rain, but kept her eyes on Zander for a few more seconds before then averting her eyes to look at the rain. She thought about asking the same question, but it dawned on her that he pretty much answered the question when he first spoke, so there was no need to ask. There was a long pause, the vibe she was getting from Zander was different than when they had met and she couldn't decide if it was bothering her or not. But, she didn't really let it bother her, beginning to not really care any longer. She stepped back a little and leaned her back against the run down building, putting her arms above her head and putting her hands behind the back of her skull. She lifted her left leg up and placed the bottom of her boot against the building as well, looking to the rain and assuming that she should get comfortable, seeing as how it wasn't letting up at all. "The walk turned out to be a little more exciting than I had expected. Started raining.. Shot someone.. Met that guy.." She paused, "Then you came along." She said in a mocking tone, making her crack a smile again.

"And then I came along."

Zander parroted the woman's last comment, seemingly unaffected by her story. He took in her new stance and tilted his head to the side slightly, then blinked and returned to his usual perfect posture. He had of course been aware of the pursuit and capture of the Materia thief, but no one had decided it was pertinent to inform him that a civilian had been involved in the capture. It made sense to the young Rockport though, in a sense. Maddie did not seem like the type to involve herself in an issue unnecessary, and certainly not if it would inconvenience her in some way. She was a ranged fighter though, given her preference for guns, so she could easily contribute to a battle while still maintaining a safe distance.

Of course, distance and ranged attacks did not always guarantee safety. His thoughts were drawn back to the initial encounter with Daze, where a helicopter had been blasted out of the sky and had crashed into the middle of the road, injuring a sniper that had been traveling within it. In the second encounter, a number of other helicopters had been downed by the massive castle-like summon that shared a name with him. In those instances, it had somehow been safer to get up close and personal with the target, which in and of itself was counter-intuitive.

The SOLDIER sighed almost silently and turned his attention back to Madiline. A small smile formed on his lips, but it was unknown whether it would even be visible given the general darkness that surrounded the pair.

"You seem to have gotten better with your gun since the last time we met then. More confident, at the very least. I would rather like to take some small amount of credit for that, but it would likely seem a bit egotistical of me, I should think."

There was a small bit of humor in his tone as he spoke, which would probably make it clear that he was not actually taking credit for Maddie's skills. That would most certainly be a bad move on his part if he were to be seriously attempting such a thing.

She continued to look out to the rain as she stood there under the overhang, breathing in slowly and letting it out even slowly. She adored the smell of rain, she always thought it was a way to give someone a calm and relaxed feeling, and that's what it was doing for her at the moment. She was relaxed, not really being sure or not if she wanted the rain to stop, otherwise she would most likely loose the smell she had come to love. If the rain stopped, it would just probably be humid smelling, and she didn't care for that smell as much. Her head remained forward, but her eyes looked to Zander as he commented about her shooting skills having improved, mostly because of him. She chuckled slightly, "No, I would agree with you. My skills have only improved because of you. And for that, I am thankful." She paused, then turned her head towards him, "Well.. I could've shot that man otherwise, but I probably only would have nicked his arm or something.. You taught me some about posture, and aim, so I got him pretty good with using what you taught me." She said, smirking a little and keeping her lips parted just slightly.

I wonder if that man died yet.. She thought to herself as she thought back to where she shot the man. Or even if he made it to the hospital in time to live, then be prosecuted. She thought back to when he took her to the shooting range, helping her keep her smirk. "I don't think I ever thanked you for the lessons, either." She paused, looking away and back to the rain, "So, thanks." She said softly, not really the kind of person to do a 'thank you', let alone a 'sorry' or a 'it was my fault, I was wrong'. She honestly felt a little weird, and kind of awkward saying it, but she felt it was needed, he did in fact help her for nothing in return, so she thought it was at least nice enough to say it to him.

"It was no problem, I assure you. Helping civilians to be more self-reliant is good, if only to place less strain upon those within SOLDIER."

He paused, running through that sentence again in his mind and barely holding back a visible wince at how callous and egotistical it sounded. Still, the damage had already been done and retracting the statement now would only serve to make him appear weak of will and constitution. He let out a heavy breath and turned to watch as the rain lessened to a light mist. He thought about making some sort of comment...something to end their interaction on a better note, but ultimately decided against it.

"Until next time, Madiline."

A strong gust of wind ruffled his clothing as a spell activated, and just as suddenly as he had arrived, he was gone. To some it might seem as if he had completely vanished into thin air, but those with well-trained senses would have been able to spot the dark blur as he rocketed away at nearly inhuman speeds. A SOLDIER never rested, never let down his guard...he was needed elsewhere.
