Doesn't particularly like the Art of Fighting, but definitely wants to be the King of Fighters.

It was another one of those days. One where one of the first things to come to his mind as he woke up was "I'm going to need to put some time into training. If Nex and Lini are 'average' level for the Battle Arena, then I'm one that would be relatively easy pickings. At that rate, I'll never be able to get Carbuncle to respond." One where he'll really need to put in some practice on his fighting technique. He may be reasonably quick to react, but not so much so when it comes to actually acting on his reactions. He knows all to well that any hesitation in battle means a window of opportunity slamming shut in his face...or one left open on his end. He may have had that bit of a boost that came up when he found himself getting beaten up a bit. However, it wasn't all that much of a boost, and unlike his Limit Breaks, this boost required him to leave his bruises unhealed. The only help it would really be is if either he or his opponent was 'grazing', as he put it, meaning that the attacks weren't hitting at full force because of the target's partial success in avoiding the attack. The boost may bring him to be able to fully dodge or fully connect an attack, but outside of these cases, the boost was not much help. And, of course, any sufficiently skilled mage, like Nex, could tear him apart in one or two attacks anyway. Chris eventually settled in a section of the Rolling Fields that was clear of monsters and pretty much everything else, then set up his training exercise: On one point, he placed his his helmet to mark that particular point. Then, he measured a distance of around ten spear-lengths away from where he placed his helmet and stuck his spear point down at that end. Chris then positioned himself for the exercise, which was simply to run back and forth in a line parallel to those two points. Chris didn't really care how long it took him per pass, mostly because he didn't really have anyone to track his time. The training regimen went like this: Ten loops around, which is probably around a quarter mile overall, then a break, then another ten loops. After three sets of ten loops, a longer break. The first set was a 'bare' set, with none of his inventory weighing him down. For the second set, he put one everything except the two pieces of equipment that he was using to mark his two endpoints. The effects of the extra weight were quite noticible, even when he wasn't tracking his time. Then again, it could have been that his going through some of his stamina also affected his time, even with the breaks to recover. Chris took another break to recover. He already had his plan for the third run set, and it was something pretty much any young man with any aspiration to be either a hero or a champion would go through: The third run would be done under artificially-increased gravity. This was partially because that was logically the next step, and partially because he wanted to put some use into the Gravity Materia. Chris could really feel the weight now. It wasn't unbearable, but it certainly wasn't pleasant, either. It also had an even more significant effect on his speed and stamina, to the point where he was close to just wanting to drop to the ground after the last loop. After that, Chris had enough running around for a little while. Chris checked the time on his cell phone. Half past one in the afternoon. Not a bad time for a midday nap, especially after that training. He had just enough energy to get to his helmet and bring it to where the spear was located, then promptly laid down on the ground, with his equipment within reach should he need it. After a little while, Chris woke up. Chris's subsequent check of the phone's clock showed quarter past two. Not that there was anything wrong with that. He didn't have to be anywhere at any time in particular. Chris got up and looked around him. Good thing he decided to do that check, as behind him, not too far away, a decent-sized pack of Bandersnatches decided to wander nearby. Although they didn't seem to notice him yet, Chris knew that one of them would pick him up. Chris prepared his 'battle setup' for his Materia, but not exactly the same as he had it: The Fire and Restore Materias were swapped positionwise, and he didn't bother with removing the currently-inserted Gravity Materia, leaving it where his Jump would normally be. As it stood, his helmet had his Barrier and Fire Materias, and his spear Restore, Gravity, and Water. Now ready, Chris decided to take another look at the pack. Four of them. Shouldn't be too much of a problem for him, as he's already close to one-shotting them with a Fira spell, and they can't reliably catch or avoid him anyway, so he wouldn't need to rush too much. He could just take one down with a level-one Fire spell and a spear strike, saving him some of his energy. And that's pretty much how he handled that pack. If there was anyone watching him, which there wasn't, they would have been a bit intimidated by how he delivered his fire attacks through his helmet. After that battle, Chris decided it wasn't such a good idea to hang around the area any longer, as there was always the chance that another pack might sense the one that was taken out and react to such a threat. Chris could handle an occasional pack of monsters without taking more than a couple of scratches, but after maybe the fourth or so, he would probably be too drained to fight them off effectively enough. That case was when he was at full power. In his current condition, he might drain himself sooner than that. Chris decided to check to see if any amongst the pack had anything worth taking with him, like the last pack he took down on his lonesome did. Nothing at all this time. "Hmm...guess I can't luck out every time..." Chris said to himself, then headed back to his plane and headed back to Midgar. By the time he got there, it was around three o'clock. Too soon to just hang it up for the day. There were still several hours left to do whatever, but nothing that involved a whole lot of physical effort. He had enough of that for today. Chris decided to try something he had in mind for a little while. Between the fact that the water from the Water Materia was in some way better than pretty much any other source and the fact that he was skilled enough to combine the power of two Materia for some combinations he could think of. One such combination that he hadn't yet tried was to infuse the power of an element into a supply of water, forming a mixture of elements that would deliver some sort of benefit when consumed. While he hadn't thought up combinations for every element, he did have one for a couple: The first one he could do was Restore, which he had on him, and would probably serve as a substitute for a traditional healing potion for the most part. Another one he had in mind, but didn't have the proper Materia in stock was Aero. He figured that if he did it in the right way, the Aero energy would push upward on the subject's body, thus cancelling out the downward push of gravity at least partially, with the result of either making it easier to avoid attacks for the subject, or negating unwanted artificial increases in gravity. However, he'd wait until he figured the proper method for mixing these kinds of things before going to trying to get too creative. "It could be a good idea for a project for me and Stilz to work on, once I have the method down." Chris thought to himself, "Granted, I don't want to break the economy with it. Then again, supply production may still be limited, either by time or by the amount of energy I can use in a day. That and I'll set the price to be around equal to the value of a normal potion. That is, one Gil per Standard Vitality Unit restored, from what I've seen." Of course, the first thing he had to do was actually get the method down. Chris needed some sort of container to work with, nothing too big, but enough to hold the amount of water he would need to make the mixture. Chris figured a good-sized cooking pot would be ideal for this. Something like that could easily be found at the Wall-Market, as would pretty much anything else that wasn't explictly for combat. And indeed, Chris found a good one for this project of his. Chris didn't immediately start his project right there and then, though. He decided it would be better for him to do this somewhere that wouldn't attract 'What the #@%! are you doing?!' reactions. However, since he no longer had a home to do this in private, Chris decided to take it out of town. Chris found another clear area to 'work his Magic', both figuratively and literally, as this project did involve Magic. Chris started by setting up a camp of sorts. It wasn't much, just a fire pit and a cleared area. The preparations were more so that he wouldn't accidentally spark a wildfire when the fire from his pit causes a chain reaction. Of course, if he was quick enough to react and had enough leftover energy, he could just extinguish the fire before it got out of control. Once everything was set up, Chris started his project, activating his Water and Restore Materias simultaneously, aiming the water into the pot, much like he would for refilling his machine's tank, and focusing the restorative energy into the water. Chris decided to test whether it worked well as it was. While Chris did notice a very minor revitalization effect from the sample, it probably didn't even register as even one unit of vitality's worth. It was too diluted as it was, and Chris didn't expect anyone to carry around and consume a full gallon of this mixture in the heat of battle. He would have to evaporate most of the water to get the effect he was looking for. It took a good fifteen minutes to boil the mixture down to an amount that would fit in a potion bottle. The fact that the solution took a greenish hue as it was boiled down was a good sign, as it meant that the restorative part of the mixture didn't all go with the water. Chris put the solution in an empty bottle that he had held on to for several months, and then from that decided to test whether it actually worked by drinking the self-made concoction. Chris felt a noticible amount of his energy being restored, although it wasn't as much as a straight Cure spell in its effect. "Hmm...I'd say around fifty percent efficiency." Chris said to himself, "Not bad both for a first try and at my level of proficiency. Maybe with a higher-level Cure, I could fit more energy into it. However, I'll need more experience before I can actually use that at a higher level." Chris went through the process a few more times as his energy permitted, hoping that by doing a few more runs, he'd be able to get a better efficiency rating. However, these trials didn't get much better results, hovering around that fifty percent mark. Chris decided to pack things up, mostly becuase it was close to supper time, and he was quite hungry. Chris was quite satisfied with the outcome of his project, though. This was probably one of the more productive days he had of solo work. While there was still some room to refine the method, to be able to do something like this at all was quite an accomplishment. |
